Frequently asked questions
How much does a swim spa cost to run?
Expect to pay between £2.50 and £4.00 per day on average.
While manufacturers often quote “optimal” conditions, the reality of the UK climate means the heater works hard.
The Heat Pump Factor: If you want to keep costs at the lower end, an external Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) is no longer optional—it is essential. A Wellis unit paired with a 5kW or 7kW heat pump can reduce your heating bill by roughly 70%.
The “Idle” Cost: Even when you aren’t using it, you are paying to keep 6,000+ litres of water at temperature. If you turn the heat down and try to “boost” it for a swim, you will actually spend more energy than if you maintained a steady heat.
Can I use a swim spa all year round (even in winter)?
Yes, but only if you are prepared for the winter electricity bill and the “dash” to the house in very cold weather!
Heating Performance: A quality swim spa (like those using Wellis Scandinavian insulation) will stay at 30°C even in a blizzard. However, your evaporation rate triples in winter when the cover is off.
The “Dual-Zone” Reality: If you buy a “single zone” (one tank), you have to choose: 28°C for serious swimming (which feels cold when sitting still) or 38°C for relaxing (which causes heat stroke if you try to swim). For true year-round versatility, a Dual-Zone model like the Rio Grande is the only honest recommendation.
What are the installation and power requirements?
The most important installation requirements are the base or ‘ground-works’, the electrics; and the delivery.
The Base: A swim spa is a substantial and heavy item when filled, so a solid, level foundation is crucial for structural integrity and safe operation. Depending on the type of swim spa you purchase and your desired aesthetic, there are three main base preparation options: Ground level, semi-sunk and fully sunk. These groundworks must be completed by the customer before the swim spa can be delivered and commissioned.
The Electrics: Most swim spas require a 32A or 40A supply it is essential that the necessary electrical connections are prepared and completed by a qualified electrician prior to delivery.
The Delivery: In 90% of UK residential installs, you will need a crane; this is usually due to access restrictions at your home. A standard “Hiab” on the delivery truck usually won’t have the reach for a 6-metre swim spa.
Johnsons Wellness provide a fully managed installation service, contact us if you would like to discuss the options.
Is the swimming experience "natural"?
Yes, but some customers say It feels like a “treadmill,” not a “track.”
The Current: Jet-based systems (standard on many entry-to-mid-range models) produce a “bubbly” and somewhat turbulent flow. It can be difficult to stay in the “sweet spot.”
Turbine Technology: If you are a competitive swimmer, “jets” will likely frustrate you. You would need to look at Turbine systems (like the Wellis W Flow System), which move a massive volume of water smoothly, rather than high-pressure air and water.
The Width and Length: Direct advice for visitors: always check the internal width and length. If it’s too narrow, your hands will hit the sides during a butterfly or wide breaststroke; if it’s too short, then taller swimmers may struggle to keep pace.
How much maintenance do they actually need?
It takes about 20 minutes a week, but if you ignore it for 14 days, it takes 5 hours to fix.
Water Chemistry: Because there is more water than a hot tub, the chemistry is more stable, but you still need to test it 2–3 times a week.
Filtration: You must wash the filters weekly. If they clog, the heater shuts down to protect itself (the “Dry Fire” error), and in winter, this can lead to frozen pipes.
Drainage: You only need to drain a swim spa once or twice a year, but be aware: 8,000 litres of water takes a long time to drain and a long time to reheat (usually 24–48 hours).
Wellis has streamlined this with their “Wellis Crystal” and OZMIX™ systems; with most models equipt with a UV-C or Ozone system as standard (which reduces the reliance on chlorine/bromine by up to 50%) and App Control that allows owners to manage filtration cycles and temperature remotely.
